Borough downtown development gets Smart Growth Award
One of eight state projects to be honored by New Jersey Future

The Princeton Borough downtown redevelopment now under way that garnered much controversy over the years has now earned a laurel — New Jersey Future will bestow a Smart Growth Award on the development and its planners later in this spring.
The Smart Growth Award honors municipal officials, developers and corporations for outstanding work that promotes the healthy growth of New Jersey communities and strengthens the prosperity and future of New Jersey.
Princeton Borough, developer Nassau HKT Associates, Princeton University, Princeton Future and the Princeton Regional Chamber of Commerce are the honorees for the award, according to a spokeswoman for New Jersey Future.
The borough and Nassau HKT formed a public-private partnership in 2003 to redevelop two municipal parking lots off Spring Street. The borough's $14.8 million, 500-space parking garage on the former Park & Shop lot next to the new Princeton Public Library opened in May. Nassau HKT, which signed long-term leases and negotiated payments in lieu of taxes with the borough, built Witherspoon House, a five-story mixed use building in front of the garage.
The nearly complete Witherspoon House contains 24 apartments, the Witherspoon Grill restaurant and a larger space for Rouge, the trendy women's clothing and cosmetics boutique. A second five-story building on the Tulane Street lot will house a food market and 53 apartments.
Princeton University donated $150,000 for a plaza adjoining Witherspoon House and the new Princeton Public Library, which is expected to open in the spring.
Princeton Future, the nonprofit citizens' group that promotes holistic planning, took a leading role in the conceptual planning process for the redevelopment site. The Chamber of Commerce provided the initial funding for Princeton Future in 2000.
New Jersey Future will honor the Princeton redevelopment project and seven other developments at a May 14 dinner at the Newark Club in Newark.
